Abstract

This paper analyzes the lack of awareness about the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act among the Subanen living in the core protected area and buffer zone of the Mt. Malindang Natural Park (MMNP) and its implications on biodiversity conservation in the area. The lack of awareness of the IPRA is traceable to the lack of information dissemination on this legislation in the study sites by the National Commission for Indigenous Peoples, the provincial lead agency for indigenous peoples, and to the absence of a Subanen organization in the area. Results indicate that while IPRA is largely unknown among the Subanen in the communities studied, they are nevertheless aware of certain rights and responsibilities of indigenous peoples that are stipulated in the IPRA. These rights are those that generally relate to livelihood and survival, such as the right to land ownership and development of land and natural resources, the right to stay in territories and not to be displaced therefrom, and the right to protect indigenous knowledge systems. The responsibilities that are known among the Subanen are those that pertain generally to protection of the environment. The knowledge of these rights and responsibilities has been transferred from one generation to another. The paper also provides a glimpse of the Subanen practices and traditions, as well as the current livelihood activities in the core and buffer zones of the MMNP and examines how these affect biodiversity.

Keywords: IPRA, Mt. Malindang Natural Park, Subanen, Don Victoriano Chiongbian, biodiversity conservation, land ownership.

Kung Bakit Ang Mga Kategoryang Subject at Object ay Hindi Angkop Sa Mga Wikang Pilipino

Abstract

Myfel Joseph D. Paluga

Abstract

This paper maps the various forms of disciplinal links that are presently evolving between the natural and social sciences. The first part reflects on the effects of disciplinal diversification on the traditionally demarcated domains—natural/social sciences—and on their conceptual foundation—nature/culture binary. It gives a partial review of recent perspectives that may be of interest to those constructing ways of strengthening disciplinal networking. The second part is an extended reflection on locating locally some of the interesting themes in constructing knowledge beyond the nature/culture divide.

Abstract

This paper examines the impact of Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) initiative on Mindanao exports to Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia (BIM). Using an export demand model, results show a significant impact of EAGA on the volume of Mindanao exports to Brunei but not for Malaysia and Indonesia. Exports to BIM are generally dependent on price. However, income elasticities are generally elastic which suggest increasing opportunities for Mindanao to export to BIM as per capita income improves in these countries.

Abstract

This paper examines the distinctive business strategies, people empowerment, and stakeholder relations employed by two selected cooperatives in Pres. Roxas, Cotabato, and Kapatagan, Digos. Using the framework on organizational development process, this study shows how these cooperatives were able to cope with their organizational problems and issues; and what interventions they made to recoup their position and instill renewed hope among their stakeholders.
The Green Valley Multi-Purpose Cooperative positioned itself as a primary agri-marketing cooperative in Pres. Roxas, and eventually branched out to other major rice-producing areas in the Cotabato province. Its strong financial condition that allowed it to expand its savings and loans into a banking service was in large part due to the strong relations it had developed with cooperative alliances, and in its innate ability to effectively manage the member’s investments.
The Kauswagan Cooperative managed to bolster its vegetable trading after its long operational slump. The coop management’s recognition of their organizational problems and their renewed effort to recover their large collectibles, complemented with the establishment of an internal control system, enabled them to embark on a transparent and sustainable cooperative undertaking.

Keywords: business strategy, empowerment, stakeholder relations, organizational analysis, human capital, cooperatives.
