Banwa is a biannual refereed journal published by the University of the Philippines in Mindanao (UPMin) to provide scholars with the venue to publish research outputs and advocate research findings especially that of UPMin researches. Banwa signifies not only a physical social community but also nature in general. Research culture in the University has improved in the past years revolving around these research themes: Life Sciences: Biosystems and Environment, Culture and the Arts and strategic policy and management.
The first issue, Vol. 1 (1) is devoted to the discussion and investigation in the humanities and social sciences. It has a special emphasis towards “Mindanao Studies”, an understandable fact in light that the university is situated in a region that has developed its constellation of meanings. The word “Mindanao” connotes more than a geographic place: it is a landscape of the imagination being shaped by its history, its politics, its wars, its art, and its cultural pluralism.
The second issue Vol. 2 (1) reflects Banwa as a “physical social community”. In fact, it serves as the operative term of the articles contained in this current issue: how the expansionist project of capital hand in hand with the state during the prewar period carved the lasang or forest into sociopolitical and economic zones, in the process displacing the indigenous communities in favor of the state-sponsored migrants settlers; what the identification of landmark imply is the notion of what a select group of Davao settlers consider as representative of their identity; how the state manages the banwa – both by its physical and social aspects; and a looked at the double edged sword that is formal education among indigenous communities.Upcoming Banwa Journals:
