Mindanao-Japan Science & Technology Platform (MJ-STeP) president, former Japan ambassador Yoshiaki Miwa, updated UP Mindanao chancellor Prof. Lyre Anni Murao with feedback from Japanese universities in a visit on May 27, 2025.
Amb. Miwa had proposed a research and development collaboration between MJ-STeP and selected Mindanao and Japanese universities to improve the quality of life in Mindanao. For this purpose, Amb. Miwa had convened a meeting on March 14, 2025, with heads of the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP), the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP), the Ateneo de Davao University, and UP Mindanao’s Chancellor Murao.
In the current visit, Amb. Miwa reported on his meetings with representatives from the universities of Kyoto, Hiroshima, Tsukuba, and Nagoya during the past two months in Japan. “The representatives from the Japanese universities have recommendations that could further sharpen the focus of the research collaborations between the Japanese and Mindanao universities,” he said.
“Among the recommendations from the Japanese researchers included research on the conversion of waste materials to other uses,” Chancellor Muirao later reported.
Chancellor Murao thanked Ambassador Miwa for the visit and the updates. She welcomed the recommendations and the opportunity for international collaboration between the universities for Mindanao’s development.
