Prof. May Anne E. Mata, PhD, of the UP Mindanao Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science, was awarded the 2025 Outstanding Young Scientist for Mathematics by the National Academy of Science and Technology of the Philippines (NAST Phil).
This was contained in a congratulatory letter signed by NAST President Jaime Montoya, dated June 2, 2025, which was shared by Prof. Mata. In the letter, Pres. Montoya said Prof. Mata will receive a trophy, a prize, and a research grant for an approved research proposal.
Prof. Mata is the first from UP Mindanao to receive the prestigious award.
“Yes, she is the first,” stated Professor Emeritus Eufemio Rasco in a message. “We should be very proud! Let us have more!” he stated.
The Outstanding Young Scientist Award recognizes Filipino scientists under the age of 41 who have made significant contributions to science and technology in the country. Dr. Mata’s exemplary research in Infectious Disease Modeling and Analysis, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Biology, and Operations Research has brought distinction not only to her discipline but also to UP Mindanao and the Mindanao scientific community.
Her recognition by NAST highlights the vital role of mathematics in addressing complex societal challenges and affirms UP Mindanao’s commitment to advancing science for the public good.
“We celebrate Dr. Mata’s achievement as an inspiration to aspiring scientists and scholars across the nation,” stated the bulletin on UP Mindanao’s social media page.

Also on June 2, 2025, Prof. Mata served as Guest Speaker in the Philippine Science High School-Southern Mindanao Campus Commencement Exercises, held in Davao City.
In her speech to the graduating students, Prof. Mata said, “I challenge you, Class of 2025, don’t just follow trends, create them. Don’t just ride the wave, steer the ship. Don’t just seek jobs, create opportunities. Be startup founders, be policy makers.”
“If you like to write, write not just for likes but for truth and healing. If you like design, design not just apps but systems that work for Filipinos. Because skills without purpose is noise, intelligence without compassion is pride, and science without service is empty,” she said.
