Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao and the UP Mindanao administration applauded the UP Mindanao Debate Varsity upon their individual introduction and corresponding achievements during the Flag Ceremony on May 19, 2025. The Debate Varsity team and members won awards in the 49th Mindanao Debate Championships held at Mindanao State University – Iligan, Iligan City on April 25-27, 2025.
The UPMin Debate Varsity were Semifinalists, among the Top 4 Teams in the 49th Mindanao Debate. The delegation was composed of Fred Omalza (1-Master in Management), Kelvin Dwayne Lampon (1-BS Biology), Alyssa Ilaguison (4-BA Communication and Media Arts), Russel Del Rosario (4-BA Communication and Media Arts), Axel Ann Banihit (1-BA Communication and Media Arts), Xious Sardoma, Jemeuel Valenzuela, Ruth Monajan, and Faculty Adviser Hanna Mae Limpag (DMPCS).
UPMin’s FKA team, composed of Omalza, Lampon, and Ilaguison, was awarded the 5th Ranking Team of Mindanao. Omalza was awarded the 5th Best Speaker of Mindanao and Lampon, 7th Best Speaker of Mindanao.
In Adjudication, Del Rosario was the Open Grand Finals Panel and 7th Best Judge of Mindanao, while Banihit was the Open Quarterfinals Chair and Breaking Judge.
Sardoma and Valenzuela were Competing Debaters, and Monajan was a Competing Adjudicator.
The Varsity teams debated and adjudicated on topics related to religion, international relations, media, national politics, education, gender, and sports.
