Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao and the UP Mindanao administration applauded the UP Mindanao Debate Varsity upon their individual introduction and corresponding accomplishments during the Flag Ceremony on May 19, 2025. The Debate Varsity had won awards in the 49th Mindanao Debate Championships held at Mindanao State University – Iligan, Iligan City on April 25-27, 2025.
The UPMin Debate Varsity were Semifinalists, among the Top 4 Teams in the 49th Debate. The delegation was composed of Fred Omalza (1Master in Management), Kelvin Dwayne Lampon (1BS Biology), Alyssa Ilaguison (4BA Communication and Media Arts), Russel Del Rosario (4BA Communication and Media Arts), Axel Ann Banihit (1BA Communication and Media Arts), Xious Sardoma, Jemeuel Valenzuela, Ruth Monajan, and Faculty Adviser Hanna Mae Limpag (DMPCS).
UPMin’s FKA team, composed of Omalza, Lampon, and Ilaguison was awarded 5th Ranking Team of Mindanao. Omalza was awarded 5th Best Speaker of Mindanao and Lampon, 7th Best Speaker of Mindanao.
In Adjudication, Del Rosario was Open Grand Finals Panel and 7th Best Judge of Mindanao, while Banihit was Open Quarterfinals Chair and Breaking Judge.
Sardoma and Valenzuela were Competing Debaters and Monajan was a Competing Adjudicator.
The Varsity teams debated for and against topics related to gender, philosophy, religion, to more pragmatic concepts such as environment, international relations, and Philippine politics.
