UP launches online portal for first-year applicants for AY 2021-2022

Applicants for first-year admission at the University of the Philippines (UP) for Academic Year (AY) 2021-2022 can now access the online portal upadmissionsonline.up.edu.ph to submit their applications.

Before accessing the UP online admissions portal, applicants are enjoined to visit upcollegeadmissions.up.edu.ph for preparatory information and instructions as well as the latest announcements. After the applicants have read the pertinent information on this website, they will be directed to the online application portal.

Online submission of applications

For safety reasons and in compliance with the IATF’s community quarantine guidelines, the UP Office of Admissions (OAdms) is implementing a No Walk-In Policy. Instead, all applicants are strongly encouraged to apply via the online portal. However, while UP encourages online accomplishment and submission, it is cognizant of technological limitations and will continue to coordinate with concerned high schools for alternative modes of submission.

To minimize exposure to the coronavirus, however, all forms shall be submitted online. Applicants shall accomplish Form 1 (Personal Data Sheet) electronically and upload their photo and electronic signature. The names of the applicants will be sent to their high schools for batch processing of grade submission starting January 18, 2021. High schools shall be notified and then be requested to log on to the Grades Submission link to accomplish Form 2 (High School Records) on behalf of the applicants.

The online admissions applications for UP are being done in light of the unanimous decision by the UP System’s University Councils (UCs) that there will be no UP College Admission Test (UPCAT) for AY 2021-2022 applicants due to health and logistical issues brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The UCs further approved an additional assessment by academic units to qualify for a degree program, if deemed necessary. Applicants will be notified of such assessment or other additional requirements after the evaluation of their High School Records.

General information on admissions

The UP OAdms has made a General Information Bulletin on Freshman Admissions (AY 2021-2022) available on both the website and the online portal.

Admission into UP is very selective due to high demand. While they come from very diverse backgrounds, applicants to UP are all ranked according to indicators of academic preparedness for university life.

In the absence of the UPCAT, a composite of the final grades in Grade 8, 9, 10 and first semester of Grade 11 shall be the basis to determine the UP admission grade (UPG). Specific degree programs may request for additional requirements to qualify for admission, if deemed necessary. To implement the policy of democratic access, UP also considers socio-economic and geographic factors in its admission process.

Selection for admission to a campus is based on the applicant’s UPG, campus quota, and/or cut-off grade. A successful applicant can receive an offer of admission to only one of his/her UP campus of choice.

The successful applicants for a given campus are ranked according to grade predictors and quotas of their chosen degree programs. Some degree programs are more competitive due to their high demand. Applicants should choose only degree programs they are interested in. If an applicant is not successful in his/her first choice of campus, the process continues in order of priority of his/her remaining choices.

Filipino public high school graduates who are in the top ten of their graduating class may apply for freshman automatic admission for AY 2021-2022, as provided by Republic Act No. 10648 or the Iskolar ng Bayan Law of 2014. The law also requires that applicants comply with other admission requirements of the University and enroll in a UP campus that is in the same region as their high school.

Application for admission for MS Food Science is now open. Deadline: February 8, 2021. Classes start in March 2021.

Must be a holder of a Bachelor's degree in Food Science & Technology and/or related disciplines

Duly accomplished Application Form (Form 1) submitted with the following:

  • Cover letter, signifying intent and degree sought

  • Original or Certified True Copy of Official Transcript of Records (with General Weighted Average (GWA) stated on the TOR; or a Certification of GWA

First-year applicants to UP for AY 2021-2022 will not undergo the UP College Admissions Test (UPCAT).  Update #2: Message of Chancellor Larry Digal to UP Mindanao constituents in the Virtual Kasadya 2020 held on 22 December 2020
 
To the faculty, staff, students, and friends, I’m happy to see all of you kahit sa Zoom lang. I think most of us agree that we cannot end this year without being together. Yes, we cannot hold the usual face-to-face Christmas party, but even just meeting via Zoom gives us a sense of normalcy and, definitely, a sense of unity that we all need in this difficult and challenging time. I’m sure each one of us has struggled and are still struggling, still adjusting, and trying our best to cope, to meet head-on, all the challenges that come our way. And despite all these challenges, and I hope you agree with me, there are still many blessings to thank for. For one, we should be thankful that we are all here, still able to do the things that we need to do as a University, as UP Mindanao, despite the huge blow from this pandemic. Kung na knockdown man ‘ta, bangon gihapon. When this pandemic hit our ground, our first priority was to protect and save lives, to install a system to protect us from the virus. Once that’s done, we thought of re-calibrating our plans. I was surprised, to be honest, that most units did not want to slow down. And wanted to continue with their plans. In fact, hesitating to give up their budget to comply with the national Budget Circular 580, which mandates a budget cut from all government agencies to come up with the required amount for the national program to fight this pandemic. This hesitation indicates that while all of us are disrupted by this virus, we want to continue to do good work for UP. Of course, we needed to reconfigure some of these plans. And you have seen, for example, that we developed the Mindanao Health Initiative program as one of our priorities for 2020 and onwards. For those of you who are not familiar with this, this program has three components. The College of Medicine, the Davao City-UP Hospital, and the Mindanao Center for Infectious Diseases. Let me share with you some highlights of what we have accomplished this year all because we refused to be tied down by this pandemic and all because of your unfazed attitude and courage in carrying out your work despite COVID-19. 
 
Our enrollment is higher this year compared to last year. It is fast-growing, faster than the UP System average. Our undergraduate enrollment increased by thirty-three percent and our graduate enrollment by about twenty-three percent. Although our freshmen enrollment was lower compared to last year, only a little lower than our carrying capacity, which is the same for the other UP campuses. Yes, we struggled and wrestled with the challenges in migrating to our remote learning system, but we are in a much better position now starting next semester.
 
We continue to work on our new academic programs. Although we slowed down a bit, which is expected, as indicated in our strategic plan, the one we pushed for during the Alumni Institute assembly in 2019. We plan to establish 3 colleges. The College of Medicine, the College of Human Kinetics, and the College of Engineering. All these actually include the offering of 16 new programs, mostly by adoption from the other UP constituent universities. We have accomplished one already, the PhD by research program. And in our budget presentation last month to the UP System, our administration, the UP System, continues to support our expansion program. 
 
We have made our message clear and consistent. We are not UP Mintal or UP Davao, we are UP Mindanao, with the potential to contribute significantly to Mindanao’s development and even beyond. This is one of the reasons why we were able to get twelve new faculty items. This is a big win for us as we continue to push for regularizing both faculty and non-faculty items and getting the items required for our new programs, not just with the UP System, but with the Department of Budget and Management, with the support of our alumni. We also performed well in research. Our publications are in high-quality journals. External research funds are increasing. We now have a Niche Center in the Regions, or NICER, on interdisciplinary diseases modeling, which will further push for the establishment of the Mindanao Center for Infectious Diseases. Especially with the network built by the Philippine Genome Center Mindanao, which has been in the forefront in assisting various groups, both public and private, in establishing their COVID-19 testing facilities. Our public service programs have been focused on addressing this pandemic. Not just with the trainings and technical assistance provided to these COVID-19 testing laboratories, but also in contributing to policy discussions with our work in modeling the spread of COVID-19 and in assisting Micro-, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) to recover from this pandemic, for example. 
 
We have made some strides in improving our processes and systems. We have improved our planning and monitoring system. We distributed a copy of the strategic plan that became one of the inputs in our campus master development plan, which we also distributed for comments. We also made some changes in our structure to improve performance. 
 
Yes, there are a number of things that we have not done, but we have done well given the difficult situation that we are all in and this is a testament to your commitment to our work, our mandate to serve. So I would like to thank you for your commitment to serve UP Mindanao, your hard work, patience, commitment, and perseverance made a big difference in what we’ve done this year despite this pandemic. As we celebrate this holiday season, although not in the usual way, let us be thankful for the many blessings we receive. Personally, I feel that we are all blessed to be able to continue the good works that God has prepared us to do for UP Mindanao. Whether as faculty, as staff, as students, or administrators, and because of this, we’re able to continue to help others. Advance Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone! Keep safe and let us all enjoy this time together.

Radyo Iskolar's radio documentaries on COVID-19

2020 121620 radyo iskolaqr 2A two-part radio documentary series on Filipino realities during the Coronavirus disease (COVID19) pandemic will be aired on 16 and 18 December 2020 at 4:00 PM via https://mixlr.com/radyo_iskolar. The radio documentaries are produced by BA Communication and Media Arts (BACMA) students in the MEDA 111: Audio Media Communication I (Informative) class. 

The radio documentaries tell six stories of different people during the pandemic. The first set of radio documentaries are: “Ang Kalbaryo ng Ordinaryo,” “Life at Home in the Midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic,” and “Pagtuong Digital: Natad sa Siyensya.” The second set is, “Pagkat-on: Estado ng mga Estudyante sa Makabagong Pamamaraan ng Pag-aaral sa Kasagsagan ng Pandemya,” “Paano na si Mama?” and “Tao Po! Tao Po.”

The goals of the radio documentaries are to share the stories of ordinary people in the time of the pandemic. It aims to add narratives to the ongoing discourse on COVID-19, particularly for the government and private sectors to help come up with better solutions in addressing the pandemic. The project is part of the Academic Program Improvement (API) project entitled, "COVID-19 Communication Awareness and Public Service." 

Radyo Iskolar is an online campus radio initiated by the BACMA program and managed by Instructor Merle Dawn Comidoy-Acol. The official Facebook page of Radyo Iskolar is https://www.facebook.com/radyo1skolar/?ref=page_internal.

The radio program is broadcast on Mixlr, an audio streaming platform for sharing live audio online. The Radyo Iskolar station manager Ms. Comidoy-Acol extended her thanks to all who listened to the Radyo Iskolar radio programs from the test broadcast in July 2020 and during the airings in October-November. “It was challenging to operate given our remote learning setup. The students were working from their homes,” she said. “Even without equipment and set-up for professional audio recordings, Radyo Iskolar managed to produce weekly content such as “Balitang Iskolar” (radio news program), “Gabay Tambayan” (radio talk show), “Replay 2K” (music radio show), “Iskoming Out” (special program on the LGBTQIA++), and “Taralets” (music radio show). Programs that are timely and relevant for the UP Mindanao community and its audience. We hope to reach more listeners in the upcoming semesters and collaborate with various departments, colleges, and offices in the university,” she said.
